Wai
had recommended supplementing with some Amino Acid
liquids, however, she admonished me to stay away from
products like the Bragg's Liquid Aminos as they contain
loads of sodium. I went into the local health food store
today and picked up a bottle of Amino Acids from a
company called Solgar. In comparing it to the others
they had, it seemed to have the least amount of 'other
ingredients' on it. I am slightly hesitant to try it
since I don't know if any of these ingredients will
cause breakouts. Therefore, I will list them here for
you guys to read:
It is called "Liquid: Predigested Collagen -
Protein" by Solgar.
The ingredients are: Soluble Protein Hydrolysate,
Deionized Water, Sorbitol Solution, Citric Acid, Natural
Cherry Flavor, Potassium Sorbate and Sodium Benzoate.
Each two tablespoon serving provide:
L-Alanine 1300mg
L-Arginine 1200mg
L-Aspartic Acid 900mg
L-Cystine 10mg
L-Glutamic Acid 1500mg
Glycine 3500mg
L-Histidine 110mg
L-Hydroxlysine 150mg
L-Hydroxproline 1000mg
L-Isoleucine 200mg
L-Leucine 450mg
L-Lysine 650mg
L-Methionine 110mg
L-Phenylalanine 35mg
L-Proline 2300mg
L-Serine 1000mg
L-Threonine 300mg
L-Tyrosine 100mg
L-Valine 350mg
Calories: 95
Protein: 15g
Carbohydrates: 9g
Cholesterol: 0g
Fat: 0g
It also has a warning about the fact it contains
Phenylketonurics(PKU) since it has L-Phenylalnine. (What
is bad about these anyhow?)
Since I know hardly anything about Amino Acid
supplementation, it would be helpful if someone could
let me know if this product is worth taking or if I
should return it to the store and try to find something
else.
Thanks guys!
Seth

No,
I'm sorry, this one is of no use, because the protein is
'dirty' protein.
Protein is amino acids linked to each other. What you
need are single amino acids; free amino acids. And
because they are acids, they never remain free under
normal circumstances; they easily react upon eachother,
so that is why real free ammin aids come in an acidic
liquid that can only been maintained in glass tubes.
they are completely glass, but you can break them at the
top, (mostly) breaking without any small pieces braking
off.
If the amino acids do not come in a liquid that needs
to be maintained in glass tubes, they are notfe amino
acids, but 'dirty' protein.
If you find such amino acids (I remember from my
experiment that they came in orange boxes; I still need
to go back to that fitness-shop where they sell them),
please first only take a leaflet where the amino acid
contents ar itd, so that I can check with you whether it
supplies you with sufficient of all the essential ones,
okay?

Hi,
I'm looking for the right amino acid supplement as
well since I am extremely active and am looking to
increase my lean body mass by a significant amount.
Searching on the web I haven't been able to find liquid
free amino acids. Here are some links to what I have
been able to find :
Gematria
on free aminos
One
of their products I was thinking of.
The 500mg/$50 better be a typo!
Individual ones in tablets and capsules :
Individual
ones in tablets and capsules
More
individual ones
Don't
know much about this one
If I were to take them in capsule or tablet form I
assume I would try to take them in ratios similiar to
eggs? The price does not really bother me much. These
links seem to be lacking in info a bit. Any ideas on
what I should ask them?
Has anyone else found any links?
Thanks,
Rob

123,
Once your skin is clear you can try these free (?)
amino acids to test whether they cause acne in you or
not.
First you only need:
L-methionine
L-cysteine
This because fruits already contain very much of all
the other amino acids.
Not until you would take more than 1,000 mg of cysteine
and methione daily, you would need to start
supplementing with phenylalanine and tyrosine too.
Taking 1,000 mg cysteine and methionine this would
already double the protein quality of the protein in 6
kg fruits (over 13 pounds; 1% protein in average
fruits).
So, this 6 kg of fruit (including a handful of Brazil
nuts, 100 gram dried dates and 100 gram dired figs; 10
gram protein in total) that contains about 67 gram
protein, with a protein quality that equals that of
soy-protein, now supplies you with as many valuable
amino acids to build muscles as 134 gram soy protein!!!
Supplementing over 1,000 methionine and
cystein, you would need equally much extra phenylalanine
and tyrosine (so equally much minus 1,000 mg):
for example:
taking 3,000 methionine and cysteine, you would need
2,000 mg phenylalanine and tyrosine.
But you better start with 500 or 1,000 mg methionine and
cysteine first.
Instead of 500 mg methionine and 500 mg cystein, you
can aslo take 1,000 mg methionine only, since the body
can easily convert methionine into cystein (not the
other way around) according to its needs.
Instead of 500 mg phenyalanine and 500 mg tyrosine,
you can also take 1,000 mg phenylalanine, since the body
can convert phenylalanine into tyrosine easily (not the
other way around).
So, summarizing, if you want to try them, you first only
need methionine, and once you want to supplement more
than 2,000 mg methionine a day, you would need equally
much phenylalanine as the methionine consumed on top of
the 2,000 mg.
But again, they may very well cause acne if they are
not really free.
PS, if you want to learn more about protein quality
and the amino acids in fruits, see http://www.13.waisays.com/protein.htm [ August 21, 2001: Message edited by: Wai ]

I
totally forgot about egg yolks and fish...
In egg yolks and fish methionine and cysteine are also
the scarsest amino acids (relative to our needs for
those individual amino acids), but here the proportions
are are bit more even;
If you consume 100 gram egg yolks (5) or fish, then upt
to 500 mg methionine solely makes very much sense,
increasing the protein quality with about 50%, thus
making the 11 gram protein in the egg yolks as valuable
as 16 gram protein or the 21 gram protein in tuna as
valuable as 30 gram protein.
The extra 5 gram egg yolk protein is equivalent to 8
gram soy protein, and the extra 10 gram tuna protein is
equivalent 13 gram soy protein.
So here the results are less spectacular than in
fruit, but this gain (8 to 13 gram "soy"
protein extra) is on top of the results in fruit
protein. (67 gram "soy" protein extra)
So a total daily supplementation of 2,500 mg
methionine will increase the overall protein quality to
such an extend that it's effect has the equivalent of 72
to 77 gram additional "soy" protein.
Maybe this
one from Solgar is a good try?
Or this
one of Solaray, that you had already found ($5.59)
Or this
one from Twin Lab ($5.09)($4.62 at Nourishingfoods.com)
Of course you should open the capsules and not take
the capsule itself. Best consumed with the fruits.
Please keep us updated about the results of
this experiment!!!
If you want to supplement over 2,500 mg methionine, than
you need to supplement with additional equal amounts of
phenylalanine and methionine (and other ones the more
you go up).

What
you need are liquid free amino acids. The capsules
contain liquids and they are free amino acids, so in
theory that should be the right ones...
but you never know what they really put in
there...
Consuming kilos of fruits (what we all do) we absorb
about 30 to 65 gram protein from all these fruits in
total (depending on your energy requirements)
These protein contain all required amino acids, but they
are relatively low in methionine and cysteine, compared
to all other amino acids, when compared to how much you
need of every amino acid.
By supplementing with methionine you also fulfil your
need for cysteine. And not until you supplement over
2,500 mg methionine, other amino acids need to be
supplemented too (phenylalanine / tyrosine)
This means that when you eat so much fruits, you can
very easily increase their protein quality by taking
methionine only, because they are only very low in
methionine.
If you would ingest much high quality protein from
escargot for example (then you would not need extra
protein, but anyway), then you would need to supplement
with many different amino acids to increase its protein
quality a bit.
so, that is the good thing about the combination
fruits and single amino acids; you can very easily
increase fruit-protein quality by taking only one:
methionine.
Please take a look at http://www.13.waisays.com/protein.htm
there you see the amounts of essential amino acids
listed in 2kg, 4kg and 6kg fruits respectively (at the
left) and the required amounts of amino acids (at the
right). From this you can clearly see that all amino
acids are abundantly present, except for methionine /
cysteine.
The caps should be okay because they are supposed to
contain liquid free amino acids...
Anything up to 2,500 mg methionine is perfect, yes!
If you would need more protein (or if you would not eat
so much fruits), then you would need other amino
acids too.

there... i recently bought Optimum Nutrition Amino 2222
Liquid Amino Acid.
it's ingredients are:
Enzymatic Hydrolyzed Whole Proteins, Pure Crystalline
Fructose, Ascorbic Acid, Natural & ARt Flavors,
Artificial Colors, Sodium Benzoate, Potassium Sorbate.
hmm.. do i have the right one? pls advise so i can
replace it if it's not... thanks...
btw, all i can see at health food stores are liquid
amino acids... is this the same as the liquid free amino
acids?
thanks...
